Staff

These pictures show the equivalent of the ‘head teachers’ during the school’s history. The first ‘head teacher’ was Charles Hoare who was referred to as the ‘Marine Superintendent’. He was also the school’s founder. Following Hoare’s death in 1908 the school was managed by CB Fry and his wife Beatrice (or ‘Ma Fry’ to the boys). When Beatrice died in 1946, CB Fry continued to manage the school until 1950 when he retired. The final two Captain Superintendents were Commander Bradby and latterly Commander Hoyle. For more information on these individuals please read the TS Mercury Background or read the book TS Mercury - A History.

The school had many staff over the years. In the earlier years the staff were exclusively ex Royal or Merchant Navy individuals. In the latter years nautical studies (such as Seamanship and Navigation) continued to be taught by these members of staff but the standard school curriculum was covered by ‘civilian’ teachers.

Although not a member of staff, a picture of  Admiral Earl Mountbatten of Burma is included. In 1950 he had agreed to be the President of TS Mercury, a post he maintained until the school’s closed in 1968.
