TS Mercury and the Scout Movement

The founder of the Boy Scouts, Lord Robert Baden Powell, was a great friend of CB Fry and was a frequent visitor to the TS Mercury. As a result, only one year after the first scout camp was held in 1907, a Scout troop was formed at TS Mercury. However, due to their bias towards nautical subjects they became known as ‘Marine’ scouts. In fact, this troop is now acknowledged by histories of Scouting as the beginning of the Sea Scout movement and the Mercury troop subsequently became the first ever Sea Scout Troop. See here for more details.
