TS Mercury Railway

In the early days of the school’s existence on the Hamble, there was a narrow gauge steam railway that ran from the house down to the site of the original pier. Presumably Charles Hoare viewed this as a toy (what man wouldn’t?) but it was used to transport goods down to the river for transport by boat to the Illovo. In 1968 the rails could still be seen embedded in the floor of the verandah which was possibly originally erected as a train shed.
